Pahoehoe

Bowdoin student @elliewanders finds the orientation of a pahoehoe lava flow (this ropy-looking rock, splotched with lichens and surrounded by moss) that we encountered in a lava field near Reykjavik, Iceland

Seahorse facts

Things you may or may not realize about seahorses:

1. They're actual fish
2. Our hippocampus is named after them
3. They swim upright
4. Which doesn't seem very efficient
5. But apparently helps them blend in with seagrass
6. Males give birth to hundreds of tiny seahorses
7. Like this baby Lined Seahorse
(Hippocampus erectus)
